Bubble Painting Ceramics

Bubble Painting is a fun and fast unique technique for applying color and pattern to a piece.

A Styrofoam cup,
Colors For Earth Color Concentrates ,
dish washing detergent,
a plastic drinking straw,
water,
spoon for stirring,
and a towel plus paper towels
for your work surface.
And lots of 04 bisque..
your going to love this technique..

Tear the Styrofoam cup .. so that the depth is about 2  or 2 1/2" tall.
Mix 2 tablespoons of color and 2 tablespoons of water together. To this mixture add 2 drops of dish detergent.

Using the plastic straw, place it in the color mixture and blow gently to create bubbles.

Or you might try rolling your bisque into the bubbles.. it creates a nice effect with a bigger bubble pattern. Work your way around the bisque, much as you would if you were sponging.

White space on your piece is created by taping or using contact paper cut outs to mask an area before bubbling.

Allow the pieces to dry thoroughly before dipping in clear glaze and firing to cone 06
(setting color before dipping or brushing can be achieved by applying  a coat of   Hair Spray )
Notes.. Your bubbles should be light and airy.. if you are getting a foam type bubble, you need to stir your paint mixture as the paint may have settled to the bottom of the cup. Or more water is needed.
Sample of Bubble Painting: The effect received when you mask out an area with contact paper and then bubble.  ( Decals were applied later to the white spaces )

Blotch Bubble Painting..  Apply a blotch of bubbles here and there on the piece.  Flood Color around the bubbled area with one stroke side loaded on a large shader brush..

img10.gif (15694 bytes) Use a # 12 shader to put in Big stroke leaves.. here and there around the flowers created by the bubble blotches..

Another example of blocking off white area before bubbling. This time using   labels.. purchased at an office supply store. Remove the labels  and paint a little pattern in each white area.

Here is an example of double bubbling..  Once you have bubbled the  entire piece.. Go back over the whole piece with another layer of bubbles.
We love this effect on items for men.. it's deep and intense with lot's of color hues and patterns.
