Slip Cast  A Simple Flood Style Mold
Slip Casting A Simple Ceramic Mold..  You will need:   An "open cast" ceramic mold (plaster), ceramic slip, towel for spot clean up.

Your Work table and equipment

Open cast ceramic molds are a pour and walk away variety… there is no need for a dumping receptacle for slip. Which makes this type of casting neat and tidy.

Pour slip slowly into each cavity of the ceramic mold.  Fill all the way to the top.  Pour The Slip In Carefully.

Ready For De-Molding The pieces are ready to de-mold when the slip is no longer liquid and the edges of the clay have begun to pull away from the sides of the plaster. Time is about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the humidity in your studio.
Pick up the ceramic mold, and as shown slightly tap the mold, to release and loosen the clay.  Remove the disk and place them on a flat surface to dry. A little tapping will loosen the leather hard clay.
Use a straw to make a hanging hole Enhancements to wet clay.
To place a top hole in the disks, use a plastic straw for a clean cut hole.

To create a frame disk, use a cookie
cutter to place an opening in the disk center.
Make a heart frame
Using a damp sponge, smooth the edges. Cast disks are already beveled so there is very little clean up.
Allow to dry thoroughly..
Fire in a ceramic kiln to sitter cone 03/shelf cone 04.
Enjoy lots of projects that can be created using  disk designs. For more ideas go back to classroom index.
