| Some find the opening created by
the pour gate, in a ceramic piece visually objectionable. Truly fine ceramic pieces can
be create when the caster fills in the pour hole and replaces it with a needle hole. |

|
After removing the ware from the mold, put the mold pieces
back together. You will use the outside of the mold as a plaster batt. On the flat
surface of the outside of the mold pour a puddle of slip
slightly larger than the ware opening you plan to fill.
|
Place the ware spare opening on top of the puddle and gently press.
Allow to stand 5 to 10 minutes.
(Note for larger puddles the standing time may be longer) |
 |
 |
Remove the ware from the plaster batt. After the setting time the clay
will easily release from the plaster.
This process has totally sealed the ceramic item.
|
| Using a slightly damp sponge smooth the clay to conform to the shape of
the item. At this point your ware is completely sealed. |

 |
Place a Tiny Hole" This final step is critical in the process. At
some place on the ceramic piece you must have an opening. The opening allows for the
moisture and natural occurring gases in the firing to be released.
You can use any pointed tool or a toothpick to place a tiny hole in the item |
