Ceramic Boxes with Brass Hinges
The  Large Hinged Boxes have some enhanced design elements that give them a professional quality. We want yours to turn out perfectly, so we have put together some simple guide lines to make these projects easy to do..  Here we go...  All of the photos can be enlarged by clicking on them, if you need a close up.

Hinged Box molds create a variety of sizes, but the calibrated opening fits the standard size hinges..
TrimInMold.jpg (113866 bytes) Cast as normal.. 3/16 inch or slightly less.

After dumping liquid slip, allow the shine to disappear from the clay and trim both the lid and bottom spares.  Remember this design has a design calibration and in order for it to fit properly, you must trim as soon as possible before the clay begins to shrink.

When the ware has reached leather hard, remove from mold.   It is important to keep the top in round to fit the hinges, so always remove piece by pulling/lifting  from the bottom.
DO NOT PLACE YOUR FINGERS OR HAND INTO THE TOP OPENING AND PULL.

NOTE: As will all un-lidded open round wares, dry  in a draft free area, to keep the piece from drying un-evenly and possibly going out of round

RemoveMold2.jpg (99399 bytes) When demolding, do not place your hands or fingers in the opening. This could cause the opening to pull out of round.
Fire Greenware
Firing Greenware, is best accomplished by placing the rim side down for both top and bottom. onto kiln washed shelf.

Check Hinges on Bisque for Fit
CheckBisqueForFit...jpg (66114 bytes) After the bisque firing.. it is always good to check the bisque rim for hinge fit.  We have not found any instances that opening has altered during the bisque firing, if the directions above are followed. However, it is best to check, and at this stage if minor adjustments are needed.. a dremel tool can accomplish it at this time.
Do Not apply glaze or color to the rims. This area will be totally sealed in the hinge by the glue.. There is no need to glaze here.

Glaze Firing
By not glazing the rims this also provide a dry foot for both lids and bottoms of all the boxes.   THAT MEANS NO VISABLE STILT MARKS ON THESE PIECES.. EVER.

DoNotGlazeRim.jpg (35476 bytes)
Glue.jpg (77267 bytes) Fill the cavity in one side of the metal hinge. We have used several glues.. C6000.. Duco. any glue that is recommend for glass.. metal etc.
When the cavity is filled, place the brass rim with the hinge center back.   You can also use the flower button as a guide for the center front.  Press in place.

Center and back would be determined by the shape or your design..

Repeat the process for the lid...

BONUS.... If you do not want to use these designs with the gold metal hinges,,, you can remove the rim on the bottom.. Leave the rim on the lid and the lid will seat on the bottoms creating a box without hinges..
